Description: Helping Yourself by Helping Others: The Benefits of Volunteering will review the benefits of volunteering for the volunteer in terms of social, emotional, cognitive, spiritual, mental, and physical functioning (e.g., Brown et al., 2005; Brown et al., 2003; Musick et al., 1999; Oman et al., 1999; Omoto & Snyder, 2010; Penner & Finkelstein, 1998; Post, 2007; Primavera, 1999; Thoits & Hewitt, 2001; Timmer & Aartsen, 2003; Van Willigen, 2000; Wilson & Musick, 2000). In the presentation, I will discuss these benefits in greater depth as well as provide a list of resources about organizations accepting volunteers and how to get involved. In addition, all attendees will complete the Volunteer Functions Inventory (Clary et al., 1998) to gain greater insight into what motivates them to volunteer and connect those findings to available volunteer opportunities.
