"Today's Sleepy Adolescent," discusses the widespread sleep problems seen in adolescents (especially the current generation). We will discuss why sleep is important in adolescence, and this discussion will include the potential negative outcomes seen in adolescents (such as mood disturbances, impaired school performance, and obesity) that are highly associated with poor sleep. We will look at how current trends related to caffeine intake and the use of electronics is worsening the issue. Also, an idea of what "good sleep" might look like will be provided, and discussion on ways parents may potentially address sleep issues with their adolescent if they are not getting the required amount of sleep, or if their adolescent reports feeling tired throughout the day, etc. This presentation is not only relevant to adolescents and their parents, but parents whose children have not yet entered adolescents may find this presentation useful as well.
